The First Woman to Serve in The US Army

Updated: Mar 7, 2024

Earlier today I posted a blog about the first woman to enlist in the United States Armed Forces. While that is a true fact, there was actually one woman who joined the US Army before her whose story I would also like to share.

"Her name was Private Cathay Williams and she was the only woman to serve in the US Army as a Buffalo Soldier. She enlisted under the false name of "William Cathay" on November 15, 1866, passing herself off as a man.

Williams was assigned to the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment after she passed the cursory medical examination. Though this exam should have outed her as a woman, the Army did not require full medical exams at this time." - National Parks Service
